SINGAPORE, 3 May 2019 – The Singapore branch of The Nautical Institute, host of the 2019 Nautical Institute Singapore Conference, announced today the finalised programme for the third edition of its annual conference which will take place on Wednesday, 15 May 2019 at the Suntec City Convention Centre.

Themed ‘Dealing with Tomorrow’s Challenges Today’, this edition of the conference will discuss four key maritime issues of tomorrow: new requirements and legislation, disruptive technology, cargo issues – loading, stowage and safe carriage, as well as upcoming loss prevention challenges.

There will be a total of four panels of senior, internationally recognised shipping leaders – each panel discussing the main themes within each key maritime issue.

Session 1’s panel will discuss the new requirements that are coming into force including sulphur cap 2020, EU Ship Recycling Convention, the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM), the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), as well as the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The panel for session 2 will debate on how disruptive technology is transforming the future of shipping and how companies operate. Speakers will discuss cyber security, electronic charts versus paper charts, autonomous versus automated vessels, and container handling in the future.

For session 3, the panel will discuss top present-day cargo issues including documentation, misdeclaration of container cargoes, storage and lashing of general/project cargo, as well as bulk cargo liquefaction.

Session 4’s panel of speakers will discuss the upcoming loss prevention challenges, and improving crew’s lifestyle and working conditions including manning, fatigue, health and wellness, and the working environment on-board.

Capt. Yves Vandenborn, Honorary Secretary and Associate Fellow of The Nautical Institute (AFNI) said, “We are dedicating a duration of 80 minutes for each session – to allow for an in-depth, meaningful and interactive discussion between both speakers and delegates.”

He added, “The discussions we have today will form the road map for the future of the maritime industry – the backbone of global trade.”
